First Impression: Isekai Ojisan

This anime is freaking gold. It has a totally unique concept. At the start of this anime, you may be expecting Ojisan to recount a tale of valor from his Isekai life but what you get is his bizarre experience in his old life and his equally ludicrous reactions to the changes in the real world. Here is my review of the first four episodes of the anime.

Anime: Isekai Ojisan

Manga: Isekai Ojisan

Mangaka: Hotondo Shindeiru (Story & Art)

Status: Currently Airing, Summer 2022

Episodes: 13

Genre: Isekai, Comedy,  Fantasy

Studio: AtelierPontdarc

Main Characters:  Ojisan, Takafumi Takaoka, Sumika Fujimiya

Synopsis: Seventeen years ago, Takafumi’s uncle fell into a coma, but now he’s back like a man risen from his grave. Soon, Takafumi discovers two bizarre things: His uncle treasures video games above all else, and, while comatose, he was transported to another world as some heroic guardian! Now, not only does Takafumi have to room with a literally magical uncle, but he also has to catch the guy up on two decades of history—smartphones, high-speed internet, modern anime tropes…and the traumatic outcome of the ’90s console war!

Story/Writing: The story is totally absurd and bizarre. The first episode starts with a boy crossing the road and we see a truck coming toward him…And it just passes away without sending him to Isekai. Not what you expected, right? The anime plays with us using this technique a lot, and it results in a laugh every time. This could be only an outcome of a well-written story. I would rate the story and writing of the anime as 9 out of 10.

Characters: Ojisan is just a hilarious character and a clueless neet. He doesn’t have common sense and all his knowledge comes from games. Ojisan’s character is so well written that it becomes a loveable character instead of a cringe one. Takafumi looks like a good character with decent knowledge of life but in every passing episode, he is proved to be more clueless than Ojisan. Fujimiya is Takafumi’s childhood friend and the only sensible character in this anime. We also have two different types of “-dere” in the anime – Elf is a typical Tsundere and Mabel is a Kuudere. I would rate the characterization of the anime as 9 out of 10.

Animation: The animation is just fine not that it really matters in this type of anime. I did love the character design of Elf and Mabel. I would rate the animation as 8 out of 10.

Sound: All the voice actors are wonderful, especially Takafumi’s and Fujimiya’s as they portray their reactions so well. The opening song “story” by Mayu Maeshima is really good. Its animation is good too, especially the part where we see Ojisan’s hilarious dance. The ending song is “Ichibanboshi Sonority” by Yuka Iguchi which is good too. I would rate the Sound/Music of the anime as 8 out of 10.

Overall: I am pretty sure this would be one of the best anime this season. I would rate the first 4 episodes as 8.5 out of 10. I would highly recommend watching this anime.
